On the day I left for Arizona, I had some spare time around mid-day and I put it to good use. I wanted to get out one last time for some winter photography, so I ventured out to nearby Policeman’s Creek, a tributary of the Bow River that flows through Canmore. I was accompanied by my friend and fellow photographer, Stewart Hamilton.
It was on the cold side, -18 deg C (about 0 deg C) but sunny with very little wind. Comfortable.
We walked along the Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk, where there are any number of good photographic opportunities, particularly in winter. I begin with this first picture, looking to the west with Mount Rundle in the background.
In addition to the great landscapes available from the boardwalk, there are interesting close-ups of the terrain alongside the path. This one features blades of natural grasses pushing up through the fresh snow. Photographs need texture; lots of it here.
On the creek side there are some very interesting subjects, including this temporary island of snow and ice, supported by deadfall in the water. Again, lots of texture and I really like the reflection.
I also spotted this snow-laden bush along the creek that makes for an interesting composition.
I conclude with another west facing view, taken farther downstream, looking back toward where we started. It includes a nice view of Mount Rundle in the background and as you can see, the creek is entirely frozen over at this point where the water flow is much gentler.
We capped off our excursion at the Good Earth, a cafe on Main Street where we enjoyed a hot chocolate and warmed up before driving home. Time well spent.
Nice shots, Peter, well constructed, and quite emblematic of winter in Canmore, with its many visual joys.
Winter scenes are the best. Yours are awsome
