This is the base of Takakka Falls, located in Yoho National Park, near Field, B.C. Its highest point is 384m (1260 ft) from its base, making it the second-highest officially measured waterfall in western Canada, after Della Falls on Vancouver Island. However its true “free-fall” is only 254m (833 ft).
The photo was taken from roughly 100 yards distant using a telephoto lens (Canon EF 70-200 mm f/2.8L USM). Much closer and the mist would have prevented me getting a picture! It is possible to get “up close and personal” with the chaos that prevails when all that free-falling water hits the rocks. But you had better be prepared to get wet!
I did a little contrast adjustment using Photoshop to “cut” through the mist and bring out some detail of the rock face behind the falls and the boulders at the bottom.
For a perspective of the overall size of the falls, I’ve included this following picture taken last year. This picture was created from three photos, stitched together vertically. By using three component photos, I’m able to zoom in closer and capture greater detail than would be possible from a single shot of the falls in its entirety. Really big things can be difficult to photograph!
“fury” is a great shot! I have tried in the past to photograph this falls but not very successfully. Now that I know a bit more, I will give it another shot. Thanks for the inspiration.
AWESOME!!!
Peter, great shot of the # 7 hole. You took it from a great angle.
I have seen the other pictures before but I do not remember seeing that shot of #7.
I guess that we are just about ready to do our book.
