We recently hosted my brother, Bruce and his wife, Joan in Canmore. We spent some time visiting the area and of course, photographing some of the magnificent scenery of the Canadian Rockies. I have two photos to share with you today that really appeal to me. The first was taken at Elbow Lake, in Kananaskis Country, southeast of Canmore. We were accompanied by a friend and former neighbour, Don Slanina also visiting the area. This scene was photographed facing north, with Tombstone Mountain in the background. Elbow Lake is the source of the Elbow River which flows to the northeast, joining the Bow River at Calgary, about 80 km (50 mi.) distant. The photo was taken in mid-morning with the light behind me and clear, blue skies. I like the light, the shallow water exposing the lakebed and the reflections. I also like the composition with the old pine on the right, the islet in mid-frame just right of Tombstone Mountain, the strong diagonal lines created by the forest and Elpoca Mountain on the left and the rocks in the foreground.
My second summer scene for today features another pretty lake, the Spray Lake Reservoir. It’s also located in Kananaskis Country, about 25 km (15 mi) due south of Canmore. It was another beautiful day, this time with some striking clouds to complement the lake and mountain features. The picture was taken facing south down the lake with Mount Nestor on the right, Mount Buller and Mount Engadine on the left and the Spray Range in the distance. Again, the mid-morning light was very appealing. I also like the convergence of the lake’s bounding ranges and the cloud bank at the bottom end of the lake.
Beautiful!
