I recently traveled to Wickenburg, Arizona to photograph some desert scenes in the area. Wickenburg is located about 100 km (65 miles) northwest of Phoenix. I was accompanied by Ward Westgate, another Canmore snowbird residing in Wickenburg over the winter.
This area offers many good photographic opportunities, including the Joshua Tree Parkway and the Weaver Mountains, where we concentrated most of our efforts. It was a challenging day, with overcast skies and consequent flat light.
These first photographs feature Joshua trees, photographed just west of Wickenburg, along a section of Highway 93. My timing was for this picture was fortunate, capturing a little bit of sunlight getting through to illuminate the Joshua tree and the cactus in the foreground.
With this photograph I was able to capture some good detail of this beautiful Joshua tree.
The Weaver Mountains are located just north of Wickenburg, offering great views of the desert to the south. This picture was taken from a convenient roadside viewpoint along Highway 89.
Here’s a good view of the mountains to the southwest. You can see Highway 89 in the upper right hand area of the photo winding its way up the Weaver Mountains.
Today’s last photograph features one of the Sonoran Desert’s hardy shrubs, having survived another harsh, dry winter.
My thanks to Ward for hosting this visit and directing us to some memorable shooting locations.
