Earlier this week, we took a family hike at the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, near the Town of Cave Creek, just 10 miles from home. I was accompanied by my son Jonathan and his family, visiting us for the holidays.
This first picture was taken as we descended the Dragonfly Trail to the creek at the bottom of a valley running through the conversation area. The creek, Cave Creek is presumably named for the town (or vice versa?).
We were fortunate to see Cave Creek with flowing water, following a particularly wet holiday season. Not unlike most creeks in the desert, this one is dry for much of the year. The sight of running water is a treat not often enjoyed on a desert hike.
This section of the trail is a particularly scenic one and is named Jewel of the Creek. We paused amid this picturesque setting to enjoy a small snack to keep energy levels up.
This panoramic scene was taken from the trail above the creek valley, offering an overview of the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area.
The Dragonfly Trail is one of many in this area, a popular venue of hikers of all skill levels.
