We had a beautiful day here yesterday, December 12. It was a bit chilly with a temperature of -9 deg C (16 deg F) but sunny with a few cloudy patches. Good photography weather, so I decided to go out and enjoy it with a walk along the Bow River. I got on a pathway just below our neighbourhood and used it to descend to the river flats below. I didn’t get far before I came upon this scene and paused to take a picture. I was intrigued with the snow caked on the long grasses. Huge snow crystals!
Moving on, I encountered several good spots to photograph but had I started, I’d still be there. I did choose this next one because the snow on the fence was a good example of its flaky texture.
I reached the flats and worked my way to another path bordering the river, where I took this picture of some interesting patterns in the ice along the shoreline. This corner, out of the main current accumulates chunks of ice from further upstream, creating this broken pattern.
Further along on my walk, I photographed this view of the Fairholme Range on the opposite side of the river. I would have been wiser to go earlier in order to capture the entire scene in sunlight. By early afternoon at this time of year, the sun disappears behind the mountains on the south side of the valley, shadowing all but the peaks on the opposite side.
My next stop was at Canmore Creek, close to where it flows into the Bow River. Again, it’s in the shadows. It’s a good scene but would have been better illuminated earlier in the day.
It was at this point that I reversed direction and took another pathway homeward. I couldn’t resist this picture of the Canmore Wall, partially visible through the trees.
I spent a little over an hour on my photo walk and I was able to get a few good pictures. I took the pictures quickly, without the aid of a tripod, using my Fujifilm X100F camera. It’s small size and light weight make it an obvious choice for this type of “hit and run” photography. Especially on a cold day when you want to minimize exposure of fingers to the cold.
Beautiful “Frosty pics”!
Love the colour in the last shot!
Beautiful Alberta winter pics … thanks for sharing… prompts many good memories!😀
Peter:
Again, you’ve brought the beauty of a cool Winter to life with your pictures. You show such warmth in them and one can visualize the colors of each even tho you showed the beauty of the areas in black and white. I’m in awe with your great work. Thanks for sharing.
