Earlier this week, I awakened to a beautiful snowy morning. After a period of warm weather and melting snow, it was a welcome event. Badly needed snow arrived just in time to boost our holiday spirits, a scant four days before Christmas. My first view of this bounty of snow was around sunrise, 8:43 am, an impressive accumulation on the railing of our back porch and the trees behind us.
Soon afterward, I ventured out into our neighbourhood, Falcon Lane. It’s a small area, consisting of 11 homes on a loop surrounding an unbuilt area referred to as the “centre lots”. That refers to three building lots in the centre that were never developed. Today they are community property, a pretty, treed area in the midst of our community. We have a gazebo between a couple of homes. It’s an attractive little shelter, complete with a barbecue, intended for use by residents as a community gathering spot.
This next scene was taken in the centre lots, featuring two aspen trees amid a small forest of conifers, primarily spruce trees.
I took a similar photograph in black and white, realizing that there isn’t much colour to be seen among the trees in winter. Again, my picture features some aspen trees, these ones considerably younger and smaller.
I had a brief chat with the young man clearing the snow from the driveways before moving along to photograph this scene, looking down the road to the bottom end of the loop.
At the bottom of the loop is a driveway serving a neighbour’s home located off the bottom end of the loop, tucked away among the trees.
By this time in the morning, the snow had stopped falling and the clouds were giving way to clearer skies. Looking back up the road, I was now able to see and photograph one of the great views we have from Falcon Lane, Mount Rundle.
At this time, I chose to call it a day. My last shot for the morning features three homes on the opposite side of the centre lots, looking up the hill. You can see Ha Ling Peak in the background on the left side of the image and you can catch a glimpse of Mount Rundle, peeking over the two houses on the right.
Overall, I was outside for the better part of two hours. I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful morning as it evolved from completely overcast and snowing to sunnier skies in the afternoon. Some times you just get lucky!
Absolutely stunning Peter.
The “Winter Wonderland” appeared just in time for Christmas! You captured it beautifully!
Very, very nice Peter! Especially like the pic off your back porch and the photo looking back up the Lane with Ha Ling Peak in the background.
Peter:
That was some snowfall, lots of it and just enough to make for some beautiful and awesome pictures by a great photographer. #4 and 7 I would love to paint if I ever take some lessons to improve my efforts. Hope you had a great Christmas and all the best to you and Rolande in 2021.
