We have just returned from a holiday on the East Coast, a 16 day trip to the provinces of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Today, I’ll share a few of the many photographs I took as we travelled along. We spent time in northwestern New Brunswick, Fredericton, St. John and an area near Prince Edward Island National Park, north of Charlottetown.
My first picture features a prominent landmark in northern New Brunswick, the pride of Hartland, the world’s longest covered bridge. The bridge was constructed in 1901 by the Hartland Bridge Company and inaugurated on July 4, 1901. It remains in operation to this day.
A visit to New Brunswick is never complete without a visit to Rolande’s hometown of Grand Falls, situated on the Saint John River. The town derives its name from a waterfall created by a series of rock ledges over which the river drops 23 metres (75 feet). A visit to Grand Falls is never complete without me taking pictures of the falls. I was fortunate to be there in springtime this year when the water flow is at or near its peak. This photograph captures the majesty and power of the St. John River as it hurtles downstream over the falls and through the Grand Falls gorge on its way to the Bay of Fundy.
I took this next photograph from the backyard of a friend’s home in Fredericton. It’s a beautiful scene featuring Regiment Creek, flowing through his neighbourhood on its way to joining the St. John River, a short distance downstream.
I took this next photo at Clipper Beach on the Bay of Fundy, about 50 km west of St. John. I was guided to this great location by my brother-in-law, Raymond Desjardins.
This picture was taken at Cavendish Beach on the north coast of Prince Edward Island . It’s a beautiful beach, below the sand dunes bordering it. We were guided to this picturesque area by another of Rolande’s brothers, Bertin and his wife, Cheryl.
As our trip neared its end, we motored back to Fredericton to catch a flight home the next day. The return to the mainland is via the Confederation Bridge, pictured below. The Confederation Bridge is a box girder bridge carrying the Trans-Canada Highway across the Abegweit Passage of the Northumberland Strait. The bridge is 12.9 km (8 miles) in length; it’s longest span is 250 metres (800 ft.) It opened on May 31, 1997.
That’s a brief summary of our recent travels. I took many more pictures, some of which I plan to share in future blog posts. Keep an eye open for it.
