This photographic adventure took place last week, destination Revelstoke, British Columbia. I was accompanied by Bob Bear on this trip, a distance of 306 km to the west of Canmore. We had two locations we wanted to visit and photograph; Mount Revelstoke National Park and Glacier National Park. Today’s post will concentrate on the former and will also include some pictures taken in and around the Town of Revelstoke.
My first photograph features Balsam Lake, located in the summit area of Mount Revelstoke. It’s a small lake adjacent to the parking lot, a good starting point for our exploration of the summit area.
From Balsam Lake, we hiked up one kilometre to the summit, where we found one of the “Meadows in the Sky”. Our timing was good to capture the profusion of wild flowers in bloom. We weren’t so fortunate with the weather, a gloomy, overcast, flat light day, not the best for taking pictures.
I wandered on a little further where I was able to capture two pictures, near the summit. The first of those is a wide angle view, looking northward along the Selkirk Range of Mountains.
Immediately to the right at this same location, is a very rocky area. The gap in the centre appears passable, but I was not inclined to pursue it. I was happy enough with this photograph to resist what might lay beyond.
The last three pictures for today were taken in the town of Revelstoke area. Bob and I took several pictures of the three bridges crossing the Columbia River in Revelstoke. This is the suspension bridge, built in 1961 to serve vehicular traffic. There is also a second bridge for cars and trucks and a railroad bridge.
I thought that the structure beneath the bridge offered some interesting patterns and texture, so I took this shot from below.
Before leaving Revelstoke the following morning, we made a stop at a local waterfall, Moses Creek Falls. Although very small, these falls are pretty, colourful and a good subject. The hike into and out of the falls was short, but challenging. It’s a steep, rugged trail, cluttered with obstacles (rocks and roots) and a few large steps. We were fortunate to have this reward for our efforts to get there.
From this area, we departed for the finale of our adventure, Glacier NP. I’ll share pictures of our visit there in my next post.
