This autumn scene was photographed in October 2015 at Barrier Lake in Kananaskis Country, about 30 minutes from home in Canmore.
In October 2012, I travelled to New Brunswick to attend a workshop led by Freeman Patterson and André Gallant two prominent Canadian photographers. One of the topics covered was abstract photography with much of the attention devoted to ICMP (Intentional Camera Movement Photography). It’s a simple concept, move the camera in the course of a long exposure. In practice it’s more challenging. ICMP requires some manual dexterity to complete the desired movement in a short interval of time (1/10 sec. in this case) before the camera shutter closes. The chosen movement (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, etc.) determines the appearance of the photograph. In this case, I used what André termed the “Nike Swoosh”.
Nike’s logo looks like a check mark to me and that’s what I tried to achieve, a short downward movement followed by a diagonal flourish to the right and upward. After some practice, I was able to get the following abstract of a birch tree, sporting its autumn colours.
The next photograph for today features Gloria Lake, situated at the foot of Mount Assiniboine, shrouded by cloud in the upper right hand corner of the image. I took the photograph in July 2015 during a helicopter tour from Canmore. It’s a 30 minute round trip with plenty of opportunity to photograph the Rocky Mountains. A short but fabulous trip.
I encountered this sheep and a number of his companions blocking Highway 40 near the Highwood Pass in Kananaskis Country. With some gentle, vehicular encouragement they moved aside to let us through but not before I took the opportunity to capture this photograph.
My final photograph for today was taken at the Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah in February, 2015. This arch, known as the North Window, is one of two openings in the arch structure, the Windows. It is one of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches in this national park. My subject was actually the old tree, pictured in front of the structure.
That’s a nostalgic look back over 10 years, sharing some favourites taken over that period. I hope you’ll enjoy them and hopefully I’ll have some fresh autumn material shortly. It still looks like summer here in Canmore, but the days are shortening and the mornings are getting cooler. Those are sure signs that autumn is coming and bringing its vibrant colours with it.
