I’m getting a little behind due to the sporadic nature of satellite internet. It works well at night, so I’m spending a little time now to post some shots from last Saturday’s stop in Aruba.
We arrived early in the morning and went ashore for an island tour before leaving for Cartagena, Colombia later in the day. My day began with a view of the sunrise from our balcony about the time that the pilot arrived to steer us ashore. I got this picture of his boat coming alongside, just before he scrambled onto the ship.
I think the most spectacular views of Aruba are seen along its northern coast. Our tour along this coast took us first to the California lighthouse. I was more intrigued with the panoramic view of the beach than the lighthouse itself, so that’s what I’m posting today.
This image is a composite of 5 shots that I stitched together in order to capture the breadth of this span of beach and stunning sky.
Another of the stops on the northern coast is the site of the natural bridge. Regrettably, this bridge collapsed in 2005, leaving only a smaller version known as the “baby” natural bridge. That particular scene was not all that interesting, so it too has been excluded. I did get some nice shots in this area of waves crashing on the rocky shore. Following are two of my favourites.
On the right side of the picture, you can see some large rocks sloping into the water. Those are remnants of the fore-mentioned natural bridge, a victim of the relentless pounding of the Caribbean Sea.
The same area, photographed from a different angle. Again, you can see the remnants of the natural bridge on the right side of the photo.
My last shot for today is actually one of our ship, moored at the cruise terminal in Aruba. I couldn’t help taking this shot after approaching the ship by bus after our tour. I was trying to capture its imposing size from this perspective. I like the photo, but it’s difficult to recreate the sensation of standing where I did in front of this very large vessel.
