Today, I’m posting photographs from the three lakes we visited on our July 17th photography day. The three locations we visited, following the Montane Traverse were Bow Lake, Herbert Lake and the Vermilion Lakes, all in Banff National Park. I’ve selected my favourites from among the shots I took, for inclusion in this post.
Bow Lake
My first image was taken at Bow Lake, about 45 minutes north of Lake Louise on the Ice fields Parkway. This is a favourite portrayal, featuring Crowfoot Mountain and the Crowfoot Glacier, in addition to the lake itself. I’ve taken this same scene many times before under many different light and weather conditions. On this sunny afternoon, I was able to include a beautiful sky, brilliant colour of the water and a nice nix of light and shadow.
In this scene, I’ve zoomed in for emphasis on the glacier, straddling the gorge between Crowfoot Mountain (right) and Bow Peak (left).
Herbert Lake
After completing our photography at Bow Lake, we turned back toward Lake Louise. We stopped at Herbert Lake, a very scenic, small lake for another shooting session. In the upper left hand corner of the image are mountains surrounding Lake Louise, including Mount Aberdeen and Mount St. Piran. The sky and the clouds are reflected beautifully in the lightly rippled surface of the lake.
Taken from a slightly different angle, this scene includes some people enjoying a pleasant summer day on Lake Herbert. That includes a swimmer, barely visible to the right of the raft furthest from the shore. He swam back to where I was photographing, curious about what I was doing. We had a good chat before he moved on. He informed me that the lake was cool, but tolerable for a swim. Right!
Vermilion Lakes
Our last stop for the day was the Vermilion Lakes, near the Town of Banff. The obvious scene to photograph at this time of day (early evening) was this view of Mount Rundle in the background, awash with warm sunlight. Sulphur Mountain in the foreground is partly shaded by clouds, creating a nice blend of light and shade.
I want to thank my good friends, Bob Bear and Stewart Hamilton for making it a very enjoyable and productive day.
Beautiful, as always!
