At times when I’m not as active taking pictures, I get the opportunity to look back at the archives in search of good candidates for a blog posting. Today I found a favourite from the autumn of 2009, a picture of Mount Rundle viewed across the Vermilion Lakes near Banff. This picture has a number of attributes that appeal to me; the mountain of course, the autumn colours and the heavy clouds draped across the peak of Mount Rundle. I was driving eastward on the Trans Canada Highway on my way home when this familiar scene caught my eye. I pulled off onto a convenient viewpoint and was able to get this shot. It just reinforces a rule of photography, “You never know when an appealing shot will materialize, don’t be caught without a camera!”
I used a very wide angle to capture this scene, a focal length of 17mm. It would probably have been better to take several shots and create a panorama, but I may not have had what I needed to do it on that occasion. As you may have observed, this area is one of my favourites for taking pictures. I’m sure I’ll be back there again, and perhaps I’ll get a second chance to capture this scene in a panorama.
