We’re now in mid-summer and despite a cool, wet spring, we’re enjoying the beauty of summer in the mountains. Today, I travelled with friends and fellow photographers, Howie Dingle and Bob Bear to an area south and west of Calgary in the foothills of the Rockies. We reached our destination via Kananaskis Country, a trip of about 2 hours each way. It was worth the journey and we were rewarded with some very nice scenery that we did our best to photograph.
My first picture was taken along Highway 40 in the south end of Kananaskis Country. This shot features an aspen grove and shows the abundance of wildflowers presently in bloom.
After a food and fuel stop in Longview AB, we moved on to a great location I had not visited before. We took the Johnson Creek Trail westward from Highway 22 south of Longview, crossing a high ridge named “the Hump” at an elevation of 2100 m (6890 ft) on our way back to Kananaskis Country. The view from “the Hump” was quite impressive, looking east toward the prairies.
Along the Johnson trail, we stopped for a walk among the trees and wildflowers to photograph more of the beauty of summer. The foliage can only be described as very lush this year, creating more photographic opportunities than I could ever hope to capture. Following are a couple from today that I found quite appealing.
A variety of wildflowers among another aspen grove. The white flower featured in the foreground is commonly know as Queen Anne’s Lace.
I hope to get out again to photograph some more wildflowers before their short growing season comes to an end.
