One last picture for October. It feels like a late autumn picture (which it is) and perhaps it’s fitting to end the month with it. It was late afternoon on our last day at the Wawona Hotel in Yosemite NP. I was returning to our room and as I walked down the porch, this scene struck me. Take a picture, I thought. Why not? It turned out fairly well, so here it is.
It was a beautiful day and the sun was getting low in the sky, casting long shadows and creating some dark corners in the areas not directly illuminated. I chose to enhance those dark areas by adding some vignetting in the corners of the photo. I like the pattern of the porch railing and its shadow on the porch deck. I also like the background grove of trees, but I had to diminish the darkness of the shadows to allow it to appear other than mostly silhouetted. It now looks pretty much as it appeared to my eye, so done!
Nicely done, Peter. At this time of year the contrast between light and dark is extreme; good job holding the details across the full spectrum given the harsh lighting you were working with. This photo would be good in black and white too. Have you tried the Oloneo Photo Engine software? Available for a free 30 day trial and the black and white editing tools are phenomenol. I will be posting some samples on my blog in the next while – photos taken on my architectural photography assignments. They have a very high contrast, inky black almost ‘wet’ look to them but still have all the details. Wood surfaces look fantastic as the grain is enhanced.
All the best to you
