Happy New Year! It’s the first day of 2012 and we’re enjoying a quiet day at home after a great holiday season with family and friends. I haven’t done much outdoor photography recently, but look forward to the next two months at home taking advantage of the season to hopefully get some nice winter scenes. I did go out a couple of days ago with my son-in-law, Andrew for a stroll around town, cameras in hand. We got a few pictures and quite enjoyed just being out in the fresh air on a very pleasant day.
Today I’m posting just one picture, taken as we walked along Policeman’s Creek which meanders through the town of Canmore.
This patch of ice along the edge of the creek caught my eye. I was fortunate to capture the ripples from a bubble that had come to the surface, particularly since they were so perfectly centred on the rounded indentation in the ice. You’ll note a circular opening in the ice in the upper right hand corner of the picture. Perhaps these circles were created by warmer water bubbling up from the creek bed.
I was unable to get very close to this subject, located on the opposite side of the creek. Fortunately I had a telephoto lens and was able to zoom in to get the close-up. I wish I had put a circular polarizer on the lens before leaving home, allowing me to cut out the glare on the water’s surface and giving me a clearer view of the creek bottom. I’m not sure it would have been a better photo, but I would like to have created the choice. Oh well, next time.
