On the same day I ventured out into the cold in Canmore, I also made a short visit to Banff, about 20 km away. It wasn’t any warmer but I again managed to get some pictures without suffering undue hardship. I was destined for Surprise Corner to get some pictures of the Banff Springs Hotel for another project I’m doing. On the way through town, I noticed an interesting looking church with an interesting name, St. George’s in the Pines. It is the subject of my first picture in this post.
Surprise Corner is located on the Tunnel Mountain Road just outside the Banff townsite. It overlooks the Bow River and of course the Banff Springs Hotel. My first picture from this location is a view along the river bank and features some pines hanging on to the steep embankment. The river below is pretty much frozen but patches of brilliant blue water show through.
Looking across the river is the majestic Banff Springs Hotel, dating back to 1887. Originally built by the CPR to support tourism and rail travel, it is now part of the Fairmont Hotel chain.
One last look at the Bow River from the embankment at Surprise Corner. I kept my distance; I had no interest in slaloming down this slope!
Enough of this cold weather stuff. My next planned photo trip is this coming Sunday to Kananaskis Country, about 30 km to the east of Canmore. The forecast is for warming temperatures and I look forward to some beautiful, winter scenery and warm fingers.
