This morning’s photo tour was an early one, leaving Canmore two hours before sunrise. It was a good thing we had some time to spare; our first two choices didn’t work out. We did a little extra driving before landing on a site for today’s photos. We had driven down Highway 93, hoping to get a good sunrise in Kootenay National Park. As soon as we crossed the continental divide it became apparent that a heavy, low lying fog was going to prevent that. Despite the sky above being crystal clear, we couldn’t see anything beyond the trees along the side of the road. We had seen earlier that visibility was good from where we had turned onto #93 and that we might get the benefit of a good sunrise, complemented by the fog. The site we chose was the Storm Mountain lookout along Highway 1A. We arrived just before the sun crested the horizon and were rewarded with the sunrise we had hoped for, as well as a wreath of fog surrounding the base of the peak.
Today’s location was pretty much a single scene event, so I’ve included one picture only; the others being variants on the same scene. The lookout provides a good view of Storm Mountain, looking across the frozen Bow River which you can see at the bottom. At the time this photo was taken, the sun was just beginning to illuminate Storm Mountain, catching the uppermost peak. Of course, there’s a great fog bank. Just enough so that the mountain is not obscured. The trees in the foreground are coated with a light layer of frost and you can see remnants of earlier accumulations of snow, since gone due to recent mild weather. So much for the mild weather! It was -17 deg C (~1 deg F) this morning, enough to put frost on the trees and a chill in my poor fingers.
Despite the cold, another great day. I’m enjoying the winter, as always and this one has been a good one for photography. Tomorrow afternoon, I’m going dog-sledding. A new first! I’m looking forward to it and you never know, there might be a photo or two to be taken!
Beautifully seen and composed! I love it.
