Sunrise comes a little late in Canmore these days, 8:41 am today (expecting earlier tomorrow after we set our clocks back). So you can understand that it is not unusual to be up before sunrise, even on a Saturday. I was downstairs for awhile and came up for a coffee at just about sunrise. I was greeted with a gorgeous morning, so I grabbed a camera and went out on the back porch to get a few pictures.
My first picture features Ha Ling Peak, directly behind our house and not only did I get the mountain in the picture but the moon too, on its way to setting later in the morning.
The sky was pretty clear looking westward toward Ha Ling and you can see that the sun’s first rays were just getting through to illuminate the peak. As I swung my attention toward the north, the sky was quite different with two of our landmark peaks poking into the clouds. This next shot is a close-up of one of them, Mount Rundle, glowing in the warm light of the early morning sun. I also managed to capture some reflected glow on the underside of the clouds.
Farther to the north is Cascade Mountain. The light on it was truly spectacular, with the entire underside of the cloud bank above brightly and colourfully illuminated.
Despite the early hour, the light was strong and it was ample to get the pictures without a tripod or increasing the camera’s sensitivity (ISO 100 was all I needed). I chose not to lighten the shadowed areas to better expose the forest. The strong tone and colour contrasts are very dramatic, not something I could improve upon.
These are really beautiful Peter. Thanks for sharing.
I witnessed the beautiful sunrise this morning and thought it would make a great photo. Should have known you would capture it Peter. Great shots!
Gorgeous photos, Pete. How blessed we are to live there.
