Across the highway from the Boundary Ranch in Kananaskis Country is a very large meadow surrounded by mountain peaks. It’s a great place to photograph mountain scenes because there are many to choose among. It’s as simple as turning around to find another great landscape. The following pictures were photographed at sunrise (5:30 am these days). The window of opportunity to capture the brilliant colours is a short one, lasting no more than about fifteen minutes. As the sun rises higher in the sky, its rays are no longer filtered by dust and moisture in the lower atmosphere and the colours dissipate. On a partly cloudy morning, the scenes are enhanced by the colours and shadows cast on the clouds by the rays of the rising sun.
In addition to the bright colours created by the rising sun, I like the contrasting greens of the evergreens and the aspens. One of my purposes in visiting this area was to get pictures of the aspens which are particularly colourful as they leaf in the spring. You can see them in the middle of the scene.
