My favourite photo for last week, taken in the course of our journey home from Arizona. Actually there was some controversy over my favourite; Rolande had a strong preference for a different photo. So, I’m including both. They were taken during my sunrise tour at Canyonlands at the same location, the Candlestick Tower overlook.
The first one, my selection is a view from above the canyon, looking westward. It was taken early with the sun low in the sky, creating all those interesting shadows. The cloud pattern is fabulous, seemingly fanning out as they move in my direction.
Just to the right of where I took this picture was a very interesting Utah Juniper. I took the picture more for the uniqueness of the tree than what I judged to be its artistic merit. As it turns out, I stumbled onto what is a very appealing picture to others, including Rolande and our neighbour, Julie. I’m now persuaded that it is indeed a good photograph. What caught my attention was the twisted trunk, spiralling upward through two complete revolutions. These trees can be very old, in excess of 5oo years and they have to be tough to endure the extreme conditions of the desert environment, stifling heat in the summer to bitter cold in winter.
Yes, I did include a similar photo of this same tree in last week’s post, Canyonlands. It gets an encore for its acclaim as a favourite of the week.
Love the tree but still waiting for a reflection! 🙂

I just love each of these photographs, Peter. I see them enlarged. A master at work.
Great stuff. Canyonlands is now on my list.
