Yesterday, I went to a favourite location, Moraine Lake. The view I’m showing today is one of the best known of the great scenes to be seen in the Canadian Rockies. This scene (or one very similar) once graced the back of the old Canadian twenty dollar bill.
I left Canmore at 4:15 am to be in position for the sunrise at 5:30 am. The forecast for Canmore was sunshine with partly cloudy skies. Ideal for the picture I wanted, a touch of alpenglow on the surrounding peaks, colour in the clouds and of course, the azure blue colour of the lake. Alas, none of this eventuated. There is never any assurance that the weather one hour away and 2000 ft higher in elevation will be the same as forecast. I wasn’t really disappointed, the scene is still stunning and I was pleased with the pictures I got. I was particularly happy with this next one taken from approximately the same location as depicted on the old $20 dollar bill.
This shot was taken from the pile of glacial rubble at the head of the lake, using a tripod. A good spot, nicely elevated with a number of locations to shoot from. I used a TS-E24 f3.5 lens with the aperture set to f8.0, ISO 160 and a shutter speed of 1/4 sec.
Fabulous!
Thanks for getting up at 4:15 am, I think it was worth it 🙂
Great image, beautifully composed. Well-worth getting up for. Nice touch about the $20 bill too; I didn’t know that!
