We’ve recently returned from a trip to Hawaii, the “Big Island” where we visited with friends, Nancy and Dave Foreman. We had a great time, mixing golf with tourism and of course, some photography. Maybe more than “some” photography, perhaps! I took 650 pictures and although I haven’t completed the sorting, I’m confident I’ve found a “Top Ten”. That means 10 photographs that appeal to me. I hope you will like them as well.
My first picture features a Night Heron we encountered on the way to the beach. He’s a little hidden in the shadows but the light and the reflections from the opposite shore of the pond appealed to me.
Our walk down to the beach that same morning took us past the Anchialine Ponds. The brackish water lava pools located just at the coastline are fed by both freshwater springs from rain water and sea water making the ponds a unique microclimate suitable for a various small fishes, crustaceans, mollusks and tiny red shrimp.
This flower, an Hibiscus jumped out at me in the course of a morning walk. How could I not photograph it!
This next picture captures all the elements of a beach scene on the island of Hawaii; the lava, the surf, a hardy kaiwe tree and the long gradual slope of a dormant volcano in the background.
This is the prettiest golf hole I saw on Hawaii during my time there. Fortunately for me, I didn’t play it; it’s a brute of a par 3! From the back tees (where I’m standing), it’s 276 yards in length. I’ve played par 4’s shorter than that!
This is Lava Lava, a popular bar on Waikoloa Beach. I like the picture more than I liked being there; the hospitality could only be described as wanting. I haven’t tried this style of photograph before. It worked for this scene.
The striking contrasts in this scene caught my attention. Living plants on an inhospitable soil and the vibrant colours against the black of the lava. I was fortunate to get the picture illuminated by the warm light of the setting sun.
This next scene was taken from the helicopter on the return trip from the Kilauea volcano. Our pilot flew us to a number of waterfalls along the Wailuku River on our approach to the Hilo Airport.
One of the prominent features of Hawaii is the surf. This picture was taken on a trip along the northeast coast of the island.
And lastly, what to do with the surf? Surfing of course. This surfer was photographed on Waikoloa Beach in the course of a morning stroll.
That does it for today’s post. Hope you enjoyed.
Beautiful …brings back a lot of “warm” memories of our visit with Dave and Nancy last year. Helen
Beautiful scenery ….Hibiscus had to be in your top 10 !!!
Most of all I really enjoy your ” mise en situation” or remarks about each of your masterpiece…
Peter,
Great images that I have been delayed in getting to. Well worth the wait! All nice – but I love the silhouetted bird: perfect composition and lines; nice colours; attractive subject.
I also particularly liked the image of the surf. Well-done on a number of fronts. I could almost hear the waves.
Thanks for sharing. I have never been there, but your photos have added to my interest, for sure.
All the best.
